Paul Mariner says Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had a falling out with Xherdan Shaqiri.

LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp had a falling out with Xherdan Shaqiri during last season.

That is according to ESPN FC pundit and former England striker Paul Mariner.

Shaqiri joined Liverpool from Stoke last summer for a fee of around £13million.

The Switzerland international initially started well in a Reds shirt, though he was mainly used as a substitute.

He most memorably scored twice off the bench in the 3-1 home win over rivals Manchester United last December.

However, he has made just two Premier Leaguestarts so far in 2019 despite no reports of a serious injury for the 27-year-old.

Liverpool have so far made just the one signing so far this summer in the shape of young defender Sepp van den Berg.

Mariner says fans should not worry though as Shaqiri’s arrival last year shows how tactical Jurgen Klopp is in the market without having to spend big.

And he claims the only reason Shaqiri did not feature much was because he did not completely see eye-to-eye with the German manager.

“Where do you need to strengthen and how much are you going to spend to strengthen at the level that Liverpool, the European champions, want to be at?” Mariner said.

“Look at [Wilfried] Zaha, [Crystal Palace are] wanting £80m-odd for him, he’s never an £80m-odd player.

“So you’ve got to be strategic. Look what he did with picking up Shaqiri at £13m, it was a stroke of genius.

“[He didn’t play much in the second half of last season  because] he had a bit of a fall out with him.

“But he came in and did some good things.

“Look at [Andy] Robertson, picking Robertson up was ridiculously good business.

“So players are out there, it’s all about your scouting network.

“Klopp must be confident with what he’s got in the building.”
