Jurgen Klopp has revealed Rhian Brewster is in for an important season at Liverpool , after he bagged two goals in their pre-season opener.

The 19-year-old striker is highly-rated at Anfield, but his path to the first team stalled after a serious injury layoff that kept him out for 18 months.

But he showed Klopp he is ready to play a part for the Reds this season with two well-taken finishes against Tranmere.

Brewster struck his first after reacting well to head home Harry Wilson’s cross, before poaching on a loose ball to add his second moments later.

Now Klopp has admitted it could be Brewster’s time to shine.

The Liverpool boss said: “100 per cent [it is a big season] but it depends on him as well.

“Divock Origi stays which is good news, Bobby Firmino is still there.

“Rhian Brewster is a top striker, he is a top talent and I have told him already that he has an important role this year but how important depends on him. We will see.

“He has to play different positions as well – the centre, wing is possible I think, we will see how we line up, but there will be opportunities for him. I am sure.”

The youngster showed a real strikers instinct with his two goals, poaching to finish both chances from inside the six-yard box.

His strikes even led commentating former Reds player Jason McAteer to draw comparisons with legendary Liverpool goalscorer Robbie Fowler.

Liverpool had showed no signs of any summer cobwebs, as they raced into a sixth-minute lead at Prenton Park.

Nathaniel Clyne hammered home a shot from the edge of the box to open the scoring, before Brewster bagged his brace.

The England youth international led the line in attack, with returning loanees Ryan Kent and Wilson operating either side of him.

Brewster was then replaced at the half as Klopp made 11 changes to his line-up.

Curtis Jones, Divock Origi and Bobby Duncan all added second half goals to complete the rout as the Merseyside club got their preparations off to a flyer.
