Manchester United have opened talks with Italian giants Lazio and made an offer of around £72m for one of their players

Manchester United have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic after Lazio slapped a £90million price tag on the midfielder.

Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to bring fresh faces in this summer and a midfielder is among his top priorities after Ander Herrera quit at the end of last season.

And with Paul Pogba seemingly intent on leaving Old Trafford for pastures new, Solskjaer is desperately searching for reinforcements ahead of the new campaign.

According to Sky Sport Italia , the Red Devils have opened talks with Italian giants Lazio and made an offer of around £72m for Milinkovic-Savic.

However the Serie A giants, who resisted United’s interest last summer to keep hold of the Serbia star, are holding firm for a £90m fee.

Italian rivals Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, the French giants, are also keeping tabs on the midfielder’s situation in Rome.

The highly-rated 24-year-old has a contract until June 2023 and Lazio are only willing to part ways with their prized asset if the price is right.

United, meanwhile, are continuing their pursuit of Harry Maguire but Leicester’s valuation remains a sticking point.

Targeted last summer after shining for England on their run to the World Cup semi-finals, the 26-year-old is once again in the Old Trafford giants’ crosshairs.

Solskjaer’s side are keen to bolster their defence with Maguire, but Leicester are under no financial pressure to sell and it is understood that there remains a gap between their valuation and that of United.

The Foxes are reported to be demanding as much as £90million for the former Sheffield United and Hull man – £15million more than the world-record fee for a defender paid by Liverpool to Southampton for Virgil van Dijk 18 months ago.

Manchester City also like the 26-year-old centre-back, who could be priced out of a move despite being understood to have made Leicester aware that he is open to exploring other opportunities.
